Funeral Services for Barry Walter Utsey, I will be held 2:30 p.m Sunday, November 6, 2011 in Rehoboth United Church of Jesus Christ, 3420 North Beltline Blvd. with burial in Memorial Gardens of Columbia.
Barry Walter Utsey, I was born June 27, 1957 in Columbia, South Carolina to the late Reverend Willie Utsey and Mrs. Hellen E. Utsey. He made his transition on November 2, 2011.
He was a graduate of W. J. Keenan High School. During his time there, he was an athlete. He played football and ran track. He furthered his education at the University of South Carolina and Allen University, majoring in Sociology. He loved his family dearly and never hesitated to tell them. Pearlie, "My Queen" and " My Sweet P"; Keycia, "My Star Child"; Gwany Gwan, "Best Singer Ever"; and B.U., "My Hero". He called them his Flowers Ke-gwan-bu-pearl.
He would often express himself through poetry and short stories—writing was his thing. He valued family, enjoyed good cooking, listening to different genres of music, and watching The Cosby Show. He valued family and always said "God has blessed me with a beautiful family — lovely, strong, gifted and intelligent children, and a loving wife, Pearlie, the "Queen of my life."
He had a passion for Jesus like no other. He grew up in a strong Christian home, where education was stressed as the key to success, growth and prosperity. God is the source of it all. He had a special love for Rehoboth Church, where he spent his final worship experience last Sunday, October 30, 2011.
Barry Walter Utsey, I leaves to cherish his precious memories and to celebrate his life his wife, Pearlie M. Utsey of Columbia, SC; three children, Tashema L. Utsey, Gwandulyn L. Jefferson, and Barry W. Utsey, II, all of Columbia, SC; his brother, Gene Alfred (Loretta) Utsey of Columbia, SC; sisters, Jacqueline (Delano) Utsey-Boulware, and Gwandulyn (Jake) Wright, both of Colunbia, SC; sister-in-law, Patricia Utsey of Columbia, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
